Dog Days of Summer

Hi friends,

Well, it's super hot and humid here. I checked the calendar and found out that we've officially entered the Dog Days of Summer.

'Dog Days' have nothing to do with dogs. It's all about the hot and humid weather that occurs when Sirius (the dog star) is rising. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, this period has been synonymous with sweltering heat, extreme humidity, sluggish energy, and general misery since the days of the ancient Greeks and Romans.

People have been complaining about this weather pattern for thousands of years!

I totally agree with them. I don't like the intense heat, the lethargy that it brings, or the thick air that surrounds me. It's not very motivating. It doesn't make you want to go outside, cook food, or do anything productive.

But what about yoga?

Now is the time to embrace a slow, mindful practice. That's the kind of yoga that I teach and that's what we do every time that we roll out our mats or sit in our chairs together. We move mindfully, we cultivate a smooth breath, we improve our focus and concentration, and we build our resilience.

This is the yoga that we can do in any kind of weather!

This week we will bring our focus to the exhale, allowing the body to calm, soften, and restore. Our practice will help to move us towards stillness and quiet - allowing us to cool down and deal with the heat.

Love & cool breezes,

Nina G
